Phillip Haworth  -  Oboe

Atéa Quintet

Philip was born in Lancashire and took tutelage from Rachael Clegg at Chethams School of Music. He later went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music with Melinda Maxwell and Rachel Pankhurst. Whilst still at the RNCM Philip had the rare opportunity to record a premiere of Edwin Roxburgh’s oboe trio – Shadow Play, with the renowned oboist Paul Goodey. During his time at the RNCM Philip won numerous prizes including the Cronshaw Lancaster Prize for Wind, Evelyn Rothwell Oboe Prize and a Henry Wood Scholarship. After which he moved to London to study a Masters of Music at the RCM studying with Christopher Cowie.

As a keen chamber musician, Philip has performed with many chamber groups in venues across the UK and other venues across Europe. With this passion for chamber music he is also a tutor on several Wind Ensemble courses including the Malvern Winds, Wind Ensemble Retreat in Yorkshie and Dartington International Festival.

As part of the Atéa Wind Quintet, who are the  Ensemble in Residence at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Philip has recently become an oboe tutor at the Conservatoire getting to work with some fantastic young oboists. The Quintet were previously Artists in Residence at the Purcell School and double prize winners in the 2015 Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition. The group are very thankful for the support of the Tunnell Trust, Live Music Now and the Kirckman Concert Society schemes, with whom they gave their Wigmore debut in 2015.

With a passion for new music, Philip is also a member of the award winning ‘Riot Ensemble’ whom primary focus is new music which has taken him across the UK around Europe and beyond. Philip has recently worked with such orchestras as the Orchestra of Opera North, Hallé Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Ensemble, Den Fynske Opera in Denmark, London Mozart Players, Orchestra of St Johns and the London Musical Arts Orchestra.

Sue Baxendale  -  Horn

Principal Horn, Scottish Opera

After studying English and Music at University of Birmingham and a postgraduate year at the Royal Northern College of Music, Sue freelanced in Manchester before taking a position as Section Principal Horn at Scottish Opera in 1996. Alongside her opera commitments, she has worked throughout the UK on horn, natural horn and Wagner tuba with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ballet, Opera North and the Scottish Ensemble amongst many others.

A varied portfolio musician, Sue also works as a freelance creative producer and project manager for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Lammermuir Festival (Community Operas), Haddo Arts Festival and McOpera Outreach, for whom she devises and delivers outreach work for children, young people and adults.

Sue is the horn tutor at both the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (Junior Conservatoire) and the Music School of Douglas Academy in Glasgow, has taught at the University of Aberdeen, Edinburgh University and North East of Scotland Music School and is a regular tutor for the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and amateur chamber music and orchestral courses.
Sue lives in Milton of Campsie, Glasgow.

Jordan Black  -  Clarinet

Atéa Quintet

Jordan Black enjoys a varied schedule of solo, chamber and orchestral engagements.

He has appeared as Guest Principal with the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, London Chamber Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

He reached the Woodwind Final of the BBC Young Musician 2012 and has appeared as soloist with Orchestra of the Swan and the London Mozart Players. A passionate chamber musician, Jordan has performed at venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Clarence House, St Martin in the Fields and the Purcell Room.

Jordan studied at the Purcell School, Royal College of Music Junior Department, Royal Academy of Music and privately in Los Angeles. He performs on Peter Eaton International clarinets.

Chiao-Ying Chang  -  Piano

International Soloist, Fifth Prize Winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition and Member of the Fournier Trio

Described by the press as ‘a true artist of elegance, thoughtfulness, passion and immense power’, Chiao-Ying Chang has distinguished herself as one of the leading pianists of her generation. A top prize-winner at the Leeds, ARD Munich, AXA Dublin and Taiwan International Piano Competitions, she has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the Halle, Royal Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Bavarian Radio Symphony, National Irish Symphony and Munich Chamber Orchestra. As recitalist she has performed at prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York, National Concert Hall in Dublin, and Konzerthaus in Berlin.

Equally at home as a chamber musician, Chiao-Ying has collaborated with renowned artists including James Buswell, Lawrence Power, Alison Balsom, So-Ock Kim and the Ysaye Quartet. She is a founding member of the Fournier Piano Trio, winner of the 2013 Parkhouse Award and 2nd prize of the 2011 Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Chiao-Ying studied with Yu-Chiou Tchen at the Affiliated High School of National Taiwan Normal University before winning a full scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Music, where she studied with Christopher Elton and Maria Curcio. In 2015 she was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM).

Chiao-Ying has given masterclasses in the UK, Norway, Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Her CD recordings include the complete Schubert Impromptus for German label Audite, a collection of 29 works by Chopin for Musica Indo inc. in Japan, and piano trios by Mendelssohn, Faure, Salter and Ravel with Resonus Classics and Usk Recordings.

Eilidh Gillespie  -  Flute

Principal Flute,  Scottish Opera

Eilidh grew up in Chester, then studied at Edinburgh University where she gained a first class honours degree in music. She went on to complete her postgraduate studies with distinction at the Royal College of Music in London where she studied flute with Simon Channing, Jaime Martin, Celia Chambers and Paul Edmund Davies, piccolo with Stewart McIlwham and baroque flute with Rachel Brown.

Eilidh’s first orchestral appointment was as principal flute of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and she has subsequently held positions with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Royal Northern Sinfonia. She was appointed as Section Principal Flute with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera in 2022, and maintains a busy freelance career with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Ballet, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. She has also worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe among others.

Eilidh’s solo and chamber performances include work with the Claremont Ensemble, the Liverpool String Quartet, appearances at the Brundibar Arts Festival and many chamber music concerts and concerto performances with Royal Northern Sinfonia. Eilidh finds teaching highly rewarding and has held positions at Newcastle and Durham Universities, and for many years taught on the Young Musicians Programme at Sage Gateshead where she coached wind chamber groups as well as giving individual lessons. She has also coached the flute sections of the National Youth Orchestra, NYO Inspire and the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.

Eilidh currently lives on the Wirral with her husband (cellist Nick Byrne) and her two young boys who keep her busy. When she finds time she loves cycling, running and baking.

Ashley Myall-  Bassoon

Paraorchestra, Orchestra of St. Johns, Bristol Ensemble and Endymion

A graduate of Leeds University and the Royal Academy of Music, Ashley is an active London based freelance bassoonist and contra - bassoonist, performing throughout the UK and abroad.

Ashley performs with numerous ensembles including Paraorchestra, Orchestra of St. Johns, Bristol Ensemble and Endymion.

His wind quintet, the Atéa Quintet, are double prize winners at the Carl Nielsen
International Chamber Music Competition, Kirckman Concert Society Artists and Tunnel Trust award winners and are Associate Ensemble in Residence and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire since 2012.

Ashley performs as part of rarescale, a flexible - instrumentation contemporary chamber music ensemble where he explores and performs new works for smaller ensemble, often in unusual combinations.

Recent performances include those with with Riot Ensemble at Kings place performing Xenakis’s, A L’ile de Goree and at the Barbican for a performance of Anna Meredith’s Fibs with the London Contemporary Orchestra. His work with the Paraorchestra sees him appear on the Sky Arts programmes, Beethoven and Me and The Anatomy of the Orchestra.

Anthea Wood  -  Bassoon

Leading UK Freelance Player

Anthea Wood is one of the leading freelance bassoonists in the UK today and has worked with orchestras, ballet and opera companies from London to Glasgow. Anthea is originally from Chesterfield in Derbyshire, and studied as a joint performer/composition student at Huddersfield University and with William Waterhouse at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester before freelancing in the North West with the BBC Philharmonic, Hallé, Opera North and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic amongst others.

Her teaching credentials have stretched to being on the bassoon staff at Chethams School of Music, Napier, Lancaster and Liverpool Universities, the Junior Conservatoire of Scotland, as well as coaching the wind sections for National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

Whilst resident in Glasgow from 2010-2020 she worked with every major Scottish ensemble and her freelance work with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra saw her proudly playing Principal bassoon in 2013 for the Proms premiere of MacMillan's violin concerto. She relocated to the south of England in 2020 and is now a regular extra player at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Anthea plays on an early 8000 series Heckel bassoon made in 1938. Its previous owner was the late Manfred Arlen, former Principal bassoon in the RLPO and co-writer (along with Fritz Spiegl) of the Radio 4 UK Theme.

Julian Sperry -  Flute

Principal Flute,  Glyndebourne on Tour & Camarilla Wind Quintet

The winner of numerous international competitions, Julian was awarded a scholarship to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Currently principal flute of Glyndebourne on Tour, Garsington Opera and Grange Park Operas, he has performed at many international festivals including Edinburgh, Salzburg and The BBC Proms.

A guest principal with The London Symphony, London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and Scottish Opera, Julian has recorded tracks for major films, notably on a number of the Harry Potter films, The Shape of Water and two films directed by George Clooney. A highlight was working personally with the late Stanley Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut.

Julian’s recital & concerto CDs have won special commendation from The Vienna Modern Masters Performers Competition, selected as The Evening Standard’s “Critics’ Choice”, & have been chosen for broadcast on Radio 3’s Private Passions. Julian is member of the Camarilla Wind Quintet.
